At the Army Residence Community (ARC), we strive to create experiences that bring our residents closer together. Our popular Mixology Class is a perfect example, a vibrant gathering where residents learn the art of crafting delicious cocktails while sharing laughter, stories, and new friendships.
Leading these spirited adventures is our very own Tabitha Cuevas, Director of Building Development, who doubles as our incredibly talented lead mixologist. She brings her expertise and infectious enthusiasm to every session. She’s wonderfully supported by the dynamic mother-daughter duo, Theresa and Emily, both cherished ARC staff members, who ensure every class runs smoothly and joyfully.
More Than Just Drinks: It’s an Experience
The Mixology Class is truly more than just learning to shake or stir a drink. It’s about the art of the pour, the shared experience, and simply having fun with fellow residents and neighbors. There’s always a palpable energy in the room, filled with laughter, storytelling, and a delightful sense of camaraderie. As Tabitha puts it, “Good bourbon can change the world,” a quote she loves from Dan Garrison of Garrison Brothers Distillery. It speaks to the idea that a thoughtfully crafted drink has the power to bring people together, spark conversation, and create meaningful moments.
Whether someone is shaking a cocktail for the very first time or reminiscing about an old favorite, the class creates a profound sense of connection. It’s a social experience wrapped in creativity and curiosity. “Mixology is where science meets soul,” Tabitha shares, highlighting the balance between technique and creativity. It’s not just about following a recipe; it’s about putting care and personality into every pour. Residents walk away not just with a new skill or recipe, but with a shared memory and, quite often, a new friend. That’s the real magic of it.
From Pandemic Pastime to Passionate Pursuit
Tabitha’s journey into mixology is a fascinating one, born from the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. When everything shut down, especially bars and restaurants, she found herself missing the experience of a well-crafted cocktail. For her, it wasn’t just about the drink itself, but the ritual, the creativity, and the nuanced flavors that made it special.
Determined to recreate that experience at home, she went beyond basic mixed drinks, aiming for quality cocktails that felt intentional and elevated. She immersed herself in YouTube tutorials and books on classic cocktail techniques, quickly stumbling into the intricate world of true mixology. She was captivated by the balance, history, and precision behind each drink, learning how ingredients interact, the transformative power of fresh juice, and how a simple garnish can elevate the entire experience.
What began as a “necessity” during uncertain times blossomed into a creative outlet and a profound passion. It became an excellent way for her to connect with her small COVID circle, bringing a sense of normalcy and joy to their gatherings. That passion for experimenting, learning, and curating delicious menus is something she carries with her to every ARC mixology class today.
Our Mixologists’ Favorite Sips
Curious about what our resident mixologists enjoy? Tabitha’s personal favorites are the timeless Old Fashioned and the sophisticated Dirty Martini. Theresa, with her love for bright and refreshing flavors, often opts for a classic Margarita or a decadent Mudslide. Emily enjoys the elegant and floral notes of a St. Germain Cocktail, which is essentially a French 75 with the delightful addition of elderflower liqueur.
The Mixology Class at the ARC truly embodies our community’s spirit—fostering connection, learning, and, above all, joy. What’s your favorite cocktail, and why does it resonate with you?
