The Smell of Coffee

By John Murphy

Simplicity brings understanding and appreciation for the finer things in life. What do I mean by that? We engage more effectively when we cut to the chase,

How does that relate to the smell of coffee? I served 28 plus years in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer. I spent much of that time deployed and in the field.

We lived an earthy life in those times. The simple things hold great value when one is under stress or suffered deprivation.

In all those years I never drank coffee, yet I came to appreciate its smell and warmth. Freezing at the foot of Mount Fujiyama in December, the logistics folks came by with vats of hot coffee. I would fill my canteen cup to the brim, sit and smell it, and warm my hands…nothing more. When the coffee turned cold, I would simply pour it on the ground and reflect on the comfort it gave me. To this day, I inwardly smile at this recollection and smile and encourage myself to focus on the simpler things in life, for they often bring surprising satisfaction.
