Pat Eckert’s Library Story

By Joe Hipp

We are a resilient group of seniors at the Army Residence Community and while visiting in “B” Wing of Health Care recently, a Resident storyteller, Pat Eckert, was holding forth. She’s an Army wife who met her husband at a West Point wedding, and once worked in protocol. With all the remodeling and maintenance going on throughout the Highrise, I thought she might be a ‘displaced person’ and have a story to tell. She did, and her Library story reeks of protocol.

Midst all the confusion of “Temporary Main Entrance, Temporary Dining Room, and Red Flag notices” an elderly resident entered a room, walks up to the attendant and loudly announced, (he’s wearing hearing aids) “I’d like a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich on whole wheat toast with mayonnaise on the side!” Linda Sorber, the library attendant, leans forward and quietly reminds him, “Sir, this is the library.” Recovering quickly the gentleman whispers, “I’m sorry, I’d like a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich on whole wheat toast with mayonnaise on the side.”

Thanks Pat. I like the story better when you tell it.
